Winners of Rhyl & Districts' "Braids Rally" 1955. W.Wynne Williams & son David from Porthmadoc, in a Volkswagen Beetle. The route covered 230 miles of roads in Snowdonia, Anglesey, Denbighshire & Flintshire and was, "......The toughest & most exciting Braid Rally to date".........

"Fourty crews started the event, 14 were forced to retire, many finding the snow & ice covered roads far too difficult to negotiate. Ice on the steep hills stopped many". One mishap reported on the event was a Sunbeam-Talbot driven by Ken Bloomfield of Llandudno which "turned over" but went on to win a class award

D W Jones-Williams from Dolgellau, at Kinmel Camp, competing on the "North Wales Rally" 1955. ............. Despite heavy rain & thick mist covering a large portion of the Snowdonia section of the North Wales Rally (Rali Gogledd Cymru), four of the 70 competitors completed the 13 road sections with clean sheets. Starting from both Rhyl AND Queensferry, the routes converged outside Ruthin and covered Flintshire, Denbighshire & Caernarfonshire before ending in Rhyl

Rhyl Motor Club was putting on LOADS of events in '75. Between May & December alone, we organised: 4 night navs, 3 mini rallies, 5 autotests, 2 production car trails, 2 "social runs", an autocross, a gymkhana, "Safe Drive 75", and the "Hillcrest Rally" ...........and in January each year was "The Gogledd". "Natter Nights" were on the second Thursday of each month. We even fitted in a Rugby Match against Clwyd Vale!.....The Club met at the Talardy Hotel in those days!

As you probably realise by now, I've got a copy of a 1975 bulletin in front of me (courtosy of Jack!) as I write this bit! Other "old names" mentioned in Arthurs' dispatches of the time include:- Bill Chadwick (see Bills page elsewere on the website), Clwyd & Hadyn Parry, Geoff Anderson, Barry Scott, Paul Salt, John Spillar, Joe Lobella, John Hill, Rik Denman, Dave Ricketts, Dave Walker, and, yes, even yours truly (was only a baby at the time and competing in a pushchair, honest!)............... How many do YOU remember?

Oh Happy Days ......... The "Rhyl" stage on the "International Welsh Rally" was to be "Penmachno1 AND 2" and the cars arrived at about 4am! .. God, how I remember those "get up at midnight to go to a stage rally...... drink all the coffee and eat all the butties before the cars arrived (3-4 hours late!) and off to the pub for the afternoon" days.

And all for the princely membership fee of £1.50 a year (or £1.75 for you AND the misses!)
